Bali gateway “already belongs to another user”: what I learned

When the gateway is online but setup stops at an ownership error, the next question is about account registration.

The useful takeaway

Read the exact error before repeating Wi-Fi setup. In my case, the gateway was discovered, but account registration was the next obstacle. Later notes show app configuration, without recording exactly how the ownership issue was cleared.

The problem I ran into

I was setting up a Bali gateway and working through what initially looked like a Wi-Fi problem. The app eventually found the gateway, but then displayed a different message: “This gateway already belongs to another user.”

That wording mattered. Finding a device and being allowed to register it are separate milestones. Repeating the same network setup did not address the ownership message on the screen.

What changed the direction of the troubleshooting

The useful clue was the combination of device discovery and an explicit account-ownership error. I treated this as a reason to check the account association next. It did not establish why that association existed or prove the device had been used before.

Possible explanations were discussed in the original troubleshooting, but none was verified. I would not describe a returned unit, a factory registration, or an account mix-up as the confirmed cause.

What to collect before contacting support

  1. Save the exact error message and note which setup step produces it.
  2. Confirm which Bali account you are signed into. Keep passwords and login codes private.
  3. Have the model, serial number, purchase receipt, and an error screenshot ready for the manufacturer’s private support channel.
  4. Ask support to verify the gateway’s account association and explain the supported next step for your unit.

A concise description is more useful than “the Wi-Fi doesn’t work”: “The app discovers my gateway, but registration says it already belongs to another user. Can you check the account association and tell me how to proceed?”

Where this case ended

The next recorded stage was the app’s timezone configuration screen. That indicates setup had progressed, but my notes do not document a specific support action or repeatable fix that cleared the ownership message. I also do not have confirmation here that every shade was successfully added.

My takeaway is to track the current blocker, not the first one. Once the message changed from discovery trouble to ownership trouble, the next question changed too.

Should you reset the blinds?

This case does not establish a reason to reset the shade motors. Gateway registration, remote association, and motor travel settings are different issues. Follow instructions for your exact hardware rather than borrowing a reset sequence from another model.

Reference and next steps

Bali’s official troubleshooting resources are the starting point for manufacturer support. For context, consult the Bali AutoView owner’s manual, checking the model before applying any procedure.
