Bali RSZ1 blinds not moving after a reset: my troubleshooting notes
Travel limits set too close together left the blinds without full functionality. I contacted Bali to request a replacement.
During troubleshooting, we set the travel limits too close together and the blinds lost full functionality. I called Bali to request a replacement. This was the outcome of my case; I did not restore the original motor through another reset.
The hardware and the symptom
My case involved an older RSZ1 Z-Wave shade motor and a BRZ1 remote. After reset and pairing attempts, the shade would not move normally. I reported that the small programming movement was physically upward only; previously it had moved briefly in both directions.
That distinction became more useful than saying simply that the shade “jogged.” Describing exactly what moved made the remaining problem clearer.
What I actually observed
- The remote and motor showed programming lights.
- Pairing appeared to complete, but normal up and down operation still did not work.
- Attempts to adjust the limits did not produce the expected travel.
- The programming movement had changed to one short upward movement.
Those observations do not prove that the motor, power supply, or mechanics are healthy. Communication and a brief movement are incomplete tests of the whole system.
Why I stopped treating pairing as the answer
Repeated programming attempts were not restoring normal movement. Looking back at what happened, we had set the travel limits too close together during troubleshooting, and the blinds lost full functionality. Pairing the remote again did not restore their normal travel.
I stopped repeating reset sequences and contacted Bali to request a replacement. That is how I handled this case, not a recommendation that every unresponsive shade needs a new motor.
A better record for the support call
- Record the motor and remote model numbers.
- List the reset procedures already attempted and what happened immediately afterward.
- Describe the physical movement precisely: direction, approximate distance, and whether the shade returns.
- Ask for the manual and supported service path for that exact generation.
Do not force the fabric or roller. Use only a power source specified for the exact motor; connector shape alone does not establish compatibility.
What the manufacturer’s documentation adds
Bali publishes different motorization manuals for different systems. The AutoView materials distinguish pairing and travel adjustments. They provide useful context, but a newer manual is not proof that its button sequences apply to an older RSZ1.
The outcome: I called Bali for a replacement
The issue in my case was the travel limits being set too close together during troubleshooting. After losing full functionality, I called Bali to request a replacement. This account does not claim that a replacement has arrived or been installed, or that the original motor was repaired.
